Why Your Recruiting Process Is Costing You the Candidates You Want Most | Accelerate HC
by David Teichner, Co-Founder, Accelerate HC
The market is moving. Strong candidates are juggling multiple processes. And too often, clients are shocked when someone drops out mid-search. Here’s the reality: candidates have options. Speed matters. And selling matters.
Speed Is a Competitive Advantage
A tight process keeps top candidates engaged. If your interviews are purely one-sided evaluations, you’ll lose them to a company that makes them feel wanted. The best companies don’t just assess candidates — they move quickly, they show real interest, and they sell why this opportunity is the one worth betting on.
Response time matters enormously. A slow response signals the candidate just isn’t a priority. The 24-hour rule should be non-negotiable. Always respond within 24 hours. If next steps are to send something, set a clear timeframe and hit it.

Don’t Ask Them to Wait on Zoom
Real situation: I had a call scheduled with a vendor whose product could genuinely help my business. Two minutes before our meeting, I got a note: “Running late on another call, just hang on Zoom for 15 minutes.” Absolutely not. My time is valuable. Asking me to sit and wait felt arrogant.
The same thing happens in recruiting. When you ask a candidate to wait, reschedule last-minute, or stack unnecessary interview rounds, you’re communicating something about how you operate. Top candidates are evaluating you just as much as you’re evaluating them.
Consider another common scenario: a candidate explaining their impact on overall team performance. A surface-level response might be, “I increased my team’s win rate by 20%.” A leader who genuinely drove that change will immediately be able to explain how they did it. Did you completely restructure the discovery process? Did you shorten the onboarding ramp time for new hires? Did you shift your targeting to a much tighter Ideal Customer Profile? Being able to dissect the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind the metric is one of the most vital interview tips you can master, proving you didn’t just inherit a good quarter—you actively engineered it.
Fix the Process, Don’t Drag People Through a Broken One
If someone is truly too busy to commit to the hiring process, adjust the process. Consolidate interview rounds. Empower your team to make decisions. Set clear timelines and hold to them.
Because in today’s market, if you’re not selling, someone else is.

Interview Process Best Practices
In today’s competitive talent landscape, a sluggish or disorganized hiring workflow is the fastest way to lose high-caliber talent to competing offers. Top candidates expect speed, clear communication, and mutual respect throughout every stage of recruitment. By implementing efficient practices—such as adhering strictly to a 24-hour response rule, consolidating interview rounds, respecting candidate scheduling, and actively selling your company culture and opportunity—you protect your employer brand and streamline talent acquisition. Optimizing your hiring process not only minimizes candidate drop-off and shortens time-to-hire, but also ensures your organization consistently secures the best executive and professional talent on the market.
