The Interview Skill Nobody Talks About: Going Deeper Than the Headline | Accelerate HC
by David Teichner, Co-Founder, Accelerate HC
Interviews don’t fall apart because someone gives a bad first answer. They fall apart because the candidate can’t go any deeper than the headline.
Someone says they worked on a special project. Great. The natural follow-ups: what happened, why it mattered, what the impact was, what you’d change if you could do it again. Someone says their past team would join them again. Also great. The follow-ups: how many, which roles, have you done that before, why those people trust you enough to follow you.
For instance, let’s say you are discussing a major enterprise deal you recently closed. The headline is: “I closed a $200k ARR deal with a Fortune 500 company.” That sounds impressive on the surface, but the interviewer will want to uncover the actual mechanics of the deal. Who was the true economic buyer? What did the competitive landscape look like? How did you navigate their complex procurement roadblocks? If you can seamlessly transition from the high-level headline into the granular strategy of your sales cycle, you demonstrate the kind of interview depth that hiring managers are actively looking for.

Depth Signals Credibility
None of this is about testing whether you checked the box. It’s about whether you’re real. Whether you genuinely know your stuff and lived the details, or whether you’re giving polished lip service.
Because here’s what interviewers know: if you truly did something, you can talk about it from multiple angles without thinking too hard. If you didn’t, the conversation falls apart quickly. And once that happens, it doesn’t just weaken one answer. It weakens the whole interview.
Consider another common scenario: a candidate explaining their impact on overall team performance. A surface-level response might be, “I increased my team’s win rate by 20%.” A leader who genuinely drove that change will immediately be able to explain how they did it. Did you completely restructure the discovery process? Did you shorten the onboarding ramp time for new hires? Did you shift your targeting to a much tighter Ideal Customer Profile? Being able to dissect the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind the metric is one of the most vital interview tips you can master, proving you didn’t just inherit a good quarter—you actively engineered it.
The Same Applies to Your Numbers
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen solid leaders lose credibility because they can’t walk through the math behind their own metrics. It’s not enough to say “RevOps tracks that” or “we have a dashboard for it.” If you’re in a leadership role, you need to understand the logic behind how those numbers come together. CAC, pipeline coverage, conversion rates, retention, payback — know what drives them.

The Simple Fix
There’s actually an easy technique that most people skip. After you answer a question, just ask: “Did that answer your question?” or “Did that make sense?” That small pause gives the other person space to clarify what they actually need, keeps you aligned, and shows you’re paying attention.
Whatever you say you’ve done, make sure you can back it up. Depth signals credibility. And credibility is what gets you hired.
